Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
